Do You Need a Visa to Visit Shanghai from Dubai?
It depends on your passport and travel purpose.
UAE (Emirati) passport holders can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days. No application needed — just book your flight and go.
All other UAE residents (Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Jordanian, and other passport holders) need a China visa obtained in advance from the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) in Dubai. China does not offer visa-on-arrival for expat residents, so you must have your visa stamped before boarding your flight.
The one exception is the 240-hour transit visa-free option, which we cover below.
Types of China Visa Available from Dubai
The visa you need depends on why you are travelling to Shanghai:
Tourist Visa (L) — For sightseeing, visiting friends, or general tourism. This is what most UAE residents apply for when visiting Shanghai. Single-entry allows a stay of up to 30 days.
Business Visa (M) — For attending trade fairs, meetings, or commercial activities in Shanghai. Requires an invitation letter from a Chinese company.
Family Visit Visa (Q) — For visiting Chinese relatives. Requires proof of family relationship and an invitation from your Chinese family member.

Documents Required for a Shanghai Visa from Dubai
Gather these documents before visiting CVASC:
Passport — Original with at least 6 months validity and 2 blank pages. Plus one photocopy of the data page.
Passport Photos — Two recent photos, 33mm x 48mm, white background, taken within the last 6 months. No glasses, no head coverings (unless religious).
UAE Residence Visa — Copy of your valid residence visa. Must have at least 6 months validity remaining from your application date.
Completed Application Form — Must be filled online at the CVASC website before your visit. Print the confirmation page. Handwritten forms are not accepted.
Flight Booking — Confirmed return ticket or onward travel itinerary showing your Shanghai travel dates.
Hotel Booking — Confirmed accommodation in Shanghai for the duration of your stay. If staying with friends or family, a letter of invitation is required instead.
Bank Statement — Last 3 months showing an average balance of at least AED 15,000. A single large deposit before applying does not meet this requirement — the consulate checks the average over time.
For Business Visa — Add an invitation letter from the Chinese company on their letterhead, including your name, passport number, travel dates, and purpose of visit.

240-Hour Transit Visa-Free Option for Shanghai
If you are flying through Shanghai to a third country, you may not need a visa at all.
Since December 2024, China replaced the old 144-hour limit with a 240-hour (10-day) transit visa-free policy. This applies to passport holders from over 50 countries, including the UAE, India, and most European and Asian nationalities.
Requirements for 240-hour transit visa-free entry:
You must hold a valid passport from an eligible country with at least 3 months validity remaining.
You need a confirmed onward ticket to a third country departing within 240 hours. You cannot return to the same country you arrived from.
You can travel within 24 designated provinces and cities during your stay — not just Shanghai. This means you can arrive in Shanghai, take a train to Beijing or Hangzhou, and leave from a different airport.
This option is ideal if: You are transiting through Shanghai on your way to Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, or another destination and want to spend a few days exploring the city without applying for a full visa.
