Bali Visa on Arrival vs eVOA — Which One Should UAE Residents Choose?
If your nationality qualifies for a Visa on Arrival to Bali, you have two ways to get it — at the airport counter when you land, or online before you fly using the electronic Visa on Arrival (eVOA) system. Both give you the exact same visa (the B1 tourist visa), the same 30-day stay, and cost the same amount. The only difference is where and when you apply — and that difference matters more than you think, especially during peak travel season.
What Is the Visa on Arrival (VOA)?
The Visa on Arrival is the traditional method — you land at Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali, queue at the immigration counter, pay IDR 500,000 (approximately AED 120 / USD 35), and receive your visa stamp on the spot. It has been available at Indonesian airports for years and works at major entry points including Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta. The visa allows a 30-day stay and can be extended once for another 30 days at a local immigration office.
What Is the eVOA?
The eVOA is the online version of the same visa. You apply through the official Indonesian immigration portal before your flight, upload your passport details and photo, pay the same IDR 500,000 fee online, and receive approval electronically — usually within 24 hours. When you arrive at Bali airport, you skip the VOA counter entirely and go straight to the autogate lanes for a faster entry.

Why the eVOA Is Better for UAE Residents
For UAE residents flying from Dubai, the eVOA is almost always the better option. Here is why:
You avoid the airport queue. Bali receives millions of tourists annually, and the VOA counter at Ngurah Rai can have queues stretching past an hour during busy arrivals — especially on flights landing in the evening from Dubai and other Gulf cities. With the eVOA, you walk past that entire queue and enter through the autogate lane in minutes.
You know your visa is approved before boarding. With the airport VOA, there is always a small uncertainty — what if there is a system issue at the counter, or you do not have the right cash denomination? The eVOA eliminates that — you receive confirmation before you even reach the airport in Dubai.
You can apply from your phone. The entire eVOA process takes 10–15 minutes on your phone or laptop. Upload your passport details, pay with a card, and you are done. No printing, no embassy visit, no documents to carry.
When the Airport VOA Makes Sense
The airport VOA can still work if you meet all of these conditions: you are travelling during a quiet period (weekday arrival, off-peak months like February or October), your flight lands early in the morning when queues are short, and you are comfortable paying at the counter in IDR or USD. If any of those conditions do not apply — especially during Eid holidays, Christmas/New Year, or summer — use the eVOA.
Which Nationalities Can Use VOA and eVOA?
Not every passport qualifies. The VOA and eVOA are available to nationals of 90+ countries including India, Egypt, most European countries, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and many others. UAE passport holders do not need either — they enter visa-free. Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Lebanese, and Sri Lankan passport holders cannot use the VOA or eVOA and must apply for an embassy visa instead.
Do Not Forget the Bali Tourism Levy
Since 2024, every foreign visitor to Bali must pay a one-time tourism levy of IDR 150,000 (approximately AED 35 / USD 10) in addition to any visa fees. This is separate from the VOA/eVOA cost and is paid online before arrival. Keep this in mind when budgeting — your total entry cost for Bali with eVOA is approximately AED 155 (AED 120 visa + AED 35 levy).
