Albania Is Not a Schengen Country — But Accepts Schengen Visas
Albania is not part of the Schengen area. It has its own borders, its own immigration rules, and its own visa policy. However, Albania has introduced a visa exemption that allows holders of a valid Schengen visa to enter the country without applying for a separate Albania visa.
This policy has made Albania one of the most popular “bonus” European destinations — especially for travellers from the UAE, India, Pakistan, and other countries where a Schengen visa is commonly held. If you already went through the effort of getting a Schengen visa, Albania rewards you with visa-free access.
The same exemption applies to holders of valid US visas and UK visas as well.
How the Visa-Free Entry Works
If you hold a multi-entry Schengen visa that has been used at least once for entry into a Schengen member state, you can enter Albania visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Your Schengen visa must be valid on the date you enter Albania — an expired Schengen visa will not qualify.
Single-entry Schengen visas also work, provided the visa is still valid and has been used for Schengen entry. The key rule is that the visa must have been previously activated in a Schengen country before you use it to enter Albania.
This means you cannot fly directly from Dubai to Albania on a brand-new Schengen visa that has never been stamped. You need to enter a Schengen country first (France, Germany, Italy, etc.), and then you can travel to Albania using that same visa.
Entry Requirements at the Albanian Border
Even with visa-free entry through your Schengen visa, Albanian border authorities will check the following before allowing you in:
Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from Albania. If your passport expires sooner, you may be denied entry even with a valid Schengen visa.
Visa validity: Your Schengen, US, or UK visa must be valid (not expired) on the date of entry into Albania. A visa that expired last week will not work.
Previous use: For Schengen visas specifically, the visa should have been used at least once for entry into a Schengen member state. Border officers may check your passport stamps to verify this.
Return ticket: Proof of onward or return travel is expected. This could be a return flight to Dubai, or a ticket to your next destination.
Sufficient funds: Evidence of financial means to cover your stay in Albania. A bank statement or credit card is usually sufficient.
Travel insurance: While not always strictly enforced, having travel insurance that covers Albania is recommended and may be requested at the border.
UAE Golden Visa Holders
If you hold a UAE Golden Visa with validity of 1 year or more, you qualify for visa-free entry to Albania regardless of whether you have a Schengen visa. This is a separate exemption — the UAE Golden Visa alone is enough.
This makes Albania an attractive option for Golden Visa holders who want a European holiday without any visa paperwork. You can book your flight from Dubai to Tirana and travel without applying for anything in advance.
UAE nationals (citizens) also enjoy visa-free entry to Albania for up to 90 days, with no additional requirements beyond a valid passport.
Albania Visa-Free Entry for Specific Nationalities
Indian passport holders: Indians living in the UAE can enter Albania visa-free only if they hold a valid Schengen, US, or UK visa. Pakistani passport holders: The same rule applies. Pakistani nationals with a valid multi-entry Schengen visa (previously used) can enter Albania without a separate visa. Without a qualifying visa, an Albania visa application is required before travel.
Filipino passport holders: Filipinos holding a valid Schengen, US, or UK visa can enter Albania visa-free for up to 90 days. This is particularly useful for the large Filipino community in the UAE who already hold Schengen visas for European travel.
Egyptian passport holders: Egyptian nationals with a valid multi-entry Schengen visa can also benefit from Albania’s visa-free entry policy. The same conditions apply — the visa must be valid and previously used.
For all nationalities, the rule is the same: a valid, previously-used Schengen visa (or valid US/UK visa) grants you visa-free entry to Albania for up to 90 days.
What If You Don’t Have a Schengen Visa?
If you do not hold a valid Schengen, US, or UK visa, you will need to apply for an Albania visa before travel. Albania does not offer visa on arrival for most nationalities, so do not show up at Tirana airport expecting to get a visa at the counter.
The Albania e-Visa is available for many nationalities and can be applied for online. Processing typically takes 5-10 working days. However, not all nationalities are eligible for the e-Visa, and some may need to apply through the Albanian embassy or consulate.

Travelling to Albania from Dubai
There are no direct flights from Dubai to Tirana (Albania’s capital) as of 2026. However, several airlines offer convenient one-stop connections through Istanbul, Athens, Rome, and other European hubs. Flight time with one stop is typically 7-9 hours.
If you are combining Albania with a Schengen country visit, the most common route from Dubai is to fly to a Schengen destination first (Italy, Greece, or Turkey for the connecting flight), explore that country, and then take a short flight to Tirana. Flights within Europe to Albania are very affordable — often under AED 200 one way.
Best time to visit Albania: May to September offers warm weather, ideal for beaches along the Albanian Riviera and exploring cities like Tirana, Berat, and Gjirokastër. October to April is cooler but less crowded, and hotel prices drop significantly.
Currency: Albanian Lek (ALL). Euros are widely accepted in tourist areas, but you will get better rates paying in Lek. ATMs are available in all cities.
Language: Albanian is the official language. English is widely spoken in Tirana and tourist areas, especially by younger Albanians. Italian is also commonly understood.
